Creating Ikebana by Kasuya, Akihiro Edition , 0 $24.49 Ikebana is perhaps the most well-known and actively practiced of all Japan's traditional arts. Its origin dates back over six-centuries and it continues to be a vital art form today. There are numerous schools of ikebana, each with its own set of rules and techniques. One such school is the Ichiyo School. Ichiyo, pronounce ee-chee-yo, meaning one leaf in Japanese, refers to the logo of the school. The School was founded in 1937 by a brother and sister, Meikof and Ichiyo Kasuya, who sought to create original ikebana that would be more suitable for modern lifestyles and environments. Today the Ichiyo School instructs students worldwide and in 1996 the School founded centers for instruction both in Europe and the United States. They focus on two types of flower arrangement: one to fit diversified personal surroundings, from traditional Japanese tokonoma, or alcoves, to Western entry tables, and another for public spaces, from stage settings to hotel lobbies. Akihiro Kasuya is the third son of Meikof Kasuya and became the school's third Iemoto (Headmaster) in 1983. CREATING IKEBANA beautifully illustrates some of Kasuya's most extraordinary creations, such as large displays featuring the school's tradition of the flowing and crossing forms, the use of color and emptiness, and the balance of asymmetry.Beautifully illustrated and with an introductory overview by the author, CREATING IKEBANA is sure to interest anyone interested in the fine art of flower arrangement. |

Ikebana by Cornell, Michelle Norman, Diane Edition , 0 $28.99 Ikebana, the ancient Japanese art of flower arranging, is guided by the desire to create harmony between flowers and their surroundings. Thought to be rooted as far back as 600 AD, its name comes from the Japanese ikeru (to keep alive, to arrange) and hana (flower). A sophisticated art form--with its emphasis on form and balance--ikebana is also an unparalleled meditative activity.Japanese masters have developed the techniques of ikebana over centuries and, while many different styles have evolved, they all share the same fundamental principles. The art embodies aesthetic considerations, knowledge of the natural forms of plants, and a profound under-standing of the space around them.Unlikely Western flower arrangements, in ikebana less is more. They key consideration is to use as few stems as possible to compose elegant contours that highlight a flower's beauty. The design must incorporate the space around the flowers in order to strike a delicate balance between all the elements. As such, ikebana arrangements provide the perfect complement for today's pared-down aesthetic.Ikeban: Japnanese Flower Arranging for Today's Interior equips you with the principles and techniques to begin making your own arrangements, as well as plenty of beautiful photographs for inspiration. These illustrations will teach you to incorporate the elements that surround you in your designs, while addressing such practical considerations as the placement of the flowers, the time of the year, and the changing seasons. In addition to the incomparable satisfaction of creating beauty in your home, the contemplative art of ikebana will prove a perfect escape from the stresses of everyday life. |
